Outreach Talk
February 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm
Biological interactions at surfaces exert a tremendous impact on a US$4 trillion global industrial base operating across many sectors, for example in marine fouling and corrosion, and in health where bacterial biofilms are responsible for many types of chronic infection. They can also be beneficially harnessed to deliver important aspects of the bioeconomy. e.g. in biotechnology, microbial fuel cells, aerobic and anaerobic biorefinery. In this talk we will describe how understanding the interactions between microorganisms and surfaces is inspiring new therapeutics and biofilm control strategies and is leading to new clinical and engineered applications. As part of this presentation we will also provide an overview of the recently awarded National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC), a £26m commitment from UK government, industry and academic partners and discuss the collaborative opportunities that NBIC provides.
