The facility has a modern open-circulating seawater aquaria system, supporting a diversity of marine research projects.

Seawater is drawn from 20m depth, 50m off the southern shoreline of St John’s Island in the Singapore Strait, where strong tidal currents occur. This provides the facility with the highest quality seawater to support marine research needs.

CLIMATE-CONTROLLED AQUARIA

Two of the aquaria is housed in Biosafety Level 2 environment that allow researchers to perform add-back experiments using selected microbial agents. These aquaria support research in the field of marine ecology, mariculture, developmental biology, and more. Researchers can perform precise manipulations of selected parameters to observe their effect on marine animals / inanimate surfaces. A team of aquarium managers is also available to provide on-site support and training.

The aquaria systems enable flow-through, partial exchange or fully recirculating aquarium systems depending on researcher’s need. All experimental spaces have access to the following services:

  • Sand-filtered and raw, unfiltered seawater; freshwater taps
  • Sump-based recirculating water treatment systems (options for UV, bio & cartridge filtration etc)
  • Air supply for tank aeration
  • Online monitoring of seawater parameters
  • Array of sensors and microsensors

Environmental parameters with control settings:

  • Lighting (colour and time setting)
  • Temperature controls (chiller, heater units)
  • pH/CO2manipulation
  • Precision dosing systems for nutrients / chemicals
