Workshop Invitation: Plastic Oceans

SJINML Seminar Room Singapore, Singapore

Plastics are used in many applications owing to their versatility, low cost and durability. Common plastics are polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a range of polyesters (e.g. PET). Such plastics are present in different size, color and morphologies in applications such as packaging, automobiles, additives in food, cosmetics, and biomedical materials. The widespread usage of plastics has created large amounts of waste materials, majority of which end up in the environment. The current talk will explain what are the structure and properties of plastics and how such materials become ubiquitous in our life. In addition, the talk will also address the plastics waste disposal and impact on the environment.

Seminar Notice: “Quest for the Ruby Seadragon” by Professor Greg Rouse, 16 November 2017 @ CREATE Theatrette NUS, 7pm

CREATE Theatrette CREATE Tower level 2, 1 CREATE Way, University Town, NUS, Singapore, Singapore, Singapore

Phyllopteryx dewysea is only the third known species of seadragon, and the first to be discovered in 150 years. They have such effective camouflage that they can appear invisible amid their habitat of kelp and other seaweeds. Despite being first collected in 1919, the new species remained unrecognized for almost a century. It was discovered, based on Museum specimens, in the course of population genetics studies on the other two species of seadragons, the leafy and weedy (common) seadragon. Phyllopteryx dewysea is referred to as the Ruby Seadragon owing to its vibrant red color.

“Sustainable Aquaculture – A Singapore Perspective” Conference, 21 November 2017 @ Nanyang Polytechnic, 0800hrs-1730hrs
