The Singapore Institute of Biology (SIBiol) and the Singapore Science Centre (SCS) jointly invites you to our annual Public Forum that will be held on the 25th August 2018 (Saturday), 10am-12.15pm at the Maxwell Auditorium, Science Centre Singapore. This year, in conjunction with the International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2018), we have two talks on the topic “Coral Reef Conservation in Singapore”.

CORAL REEF CONSERVATION IN SINGAPORE – SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL!

Dr Chou Loke Ming
Professor, Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore

Professor Chou is a marine biologist and an adjunct Research Professor at the Tropical Marine Science Institute of the National University of Singapore. He obtained his PhD in Zoology from the University of Singapore in 1976 and has been with the university since 1977.

His research on coral reef ecology and integrated coastal management covers Southeast Asia. He coordinated and edited the 2009 State of the Marine Environment Report for the East Asian Seas for the United Nations Environment Programme.

His current research focus is on reef restoration. Prof. Chou has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (International Coral Reef Initiative), serving as its Chairman from 2003 to 2005.

THE 5Cs OF OUR SEAS

Miss Sam Shu Qin
Researcher, Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore

Miss Sam Shu Qin is a researcher in Marine Biology at TMSI and cofounder of the non-profit initiative “Our Singapore Reefs (OSR)”. The OSR has been working closely with non-government organisations (NGOs) and governmental agencies for dive cleanups and public outreach activities.

Miss Sam focuses on conserving and restoring corals through coral nurseries in our southern reefs. Since her graduation, Sam continues to pursue her interest in marine biology and has been working with marine animals. Her passion is to educate youth on coral conservation.

Sam is also pursuing a postgraduate degree in Science Communication, to achieve her goal of effectively conveying the ocean’s plight to the young and old. She shares her experiences on ongoing efforts on conservation and environmentalism in Singapore.
