[Research News] Birthing new corals to protect the reefs

Birthing new corals

Have you walked past wayside trees like the Tembusu all flowering at the same time? Underwater, some corals perform the synchronous release of eggs and sperm too. For the marine scientists investigating corals, the annual spawning event is a period of frenzy, with repeated field dives to monitor the maturity of egg-sperm bundles on suitable parent colonies.

In this news feature, coral spawning was closely monitored under laboratory setting at SJINML. Successfully fertilised coral larvae will contribute towards a more sustainable supply of corals for research and aquarium trade.
