[Seminar] The Majoidea of Singapore and the revision of the epialtid genus

Seminar by Dr Lee Bee Yan,
Research Fellow at St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory

Date: Friday, 20 March 2020
Time: 3 – 4pm
Venue: SJINML Seminar Room

Abstract:

The taxonomy of Singapore Spider Crabs (Majoidea) is reviewed and revised after 50 years. Recent expeditions around Singapore have increased the fauna which now stands at three families and 35 species, one of which is a new record.

The systematics of one of the most species-rich genera in the majoid family Epialtidae MacLeay, 1838: Rochinia A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, is revised using molecular (five genetic markers) and morphological methods. Species within this genus are typically found within deep waters except for Rochinia gracilipes A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, which is the type species. Little is known of the ecology for these species. Rochinia is redefined and restricted to the type species from the Atlantic while the remaining Indo-West Pacific species are transferred to seven other genera (one new), with new species described globally.
